The African American
Forum on Race &
Regionalism was
initiated in 2002.
The Forum is a
collaborative
project of the
Sustainable
Metropolitan
Communities
Initiative directed
by Carl Anthony at
the Ford
Foundation.
The three Co-chairs
of the Forum are
Angela Blackwell of
PolicyLink; john
powell of the Kirwan
Institute for the
Study of Race and
Ethnicity, and
Robert Bullard, of
the Clark-Atlanta
University
Environmental
Justice Resource
Center. Sustainable
Community
Development Group,
Inc. directed by
Deeohn Ferris, is
the Forum’s
Secretariat.
The Ford Foundation,
AAFRR Co-Chairs and
the Secretariat work
collaboratively
through the Forum to
help broaden,
strengthen and
promote the
involvement of
African Americans
and African American
organizations in
policy development,
decisions and
place-based
projects.
The African American
Forum on Race &
Regionalism (or
AAFRR) is a means
for African
Americans and other
stakeholders to
collaborate and
strategize on
metropolitan
sustainability,
equitable
development,
environmental and
economic justice.
AAFRR partners are
working on
helping African
American
constituencies share
perspectives, build
alliances and
advance collective
strategies in
relation to smart
growth, regionalism
and equitable
development.
AAFRR incorporates a
breadth of
perspectives
critical to forging
effective approaches
and tactics. AAFRR
provides a place for
interdisciplinary
dialogue on regional
equity and
sustainable
development. Our
goal is ensuring
that the voice and
views of African
Americans are joined
with other
stakeholders and
everyone shares the
benefits and
opportunities of
investments and
community
development.
A Vital Area of
Interest:
Like most Americans,
AAFRR is keenly
interested in the
recovery of the
people of the Gulf
Coast region.
Hurricanes Katrina,
Rita and Wilma
displaced and
affected significant
numbers of African
Americans and the
devastation that
followed exists
months later as if
the storm occurred
today. Federal,
state and local
governments must
formulate and fully
fund an acceptable
plan that will not
negatively impact
local residents and
more specifically
African Americans,
many of whom were
already economically
and socially
disadvantaged.
AAFRR is working
with other engaged
organizations to
ensure that local
African American
leadership is at the
center of
sustainable
restoration and
rebuilding in the
region.
