GULF COAST / KATRINA RE-BUILDING

Vital Areas of Interest: Like most Americans AAFRR is keenly interested in the recovery of the Gulf Coast.  Hurricane Katrina has displaced millions of African Americans and the devastation that followed exist months later as if the storm occurred today.  The federal, state and local governments have yet to formulate an acceptable plan that will not negatively impact local residents and more specifically African Americans.  The members of the AAFRR strongly believes that it must help provide the necessary leadership to ensure that the residents of the region who are African American can resume their lives with a minimum amount of economic hardship.

A Safe Way back Home

The “Safe Way Back Home” (SWBH) campaign is a neighborhood clean up

initiative organized by the Deep South Center for Environmental Justice at Dillard University and the United Steel Workers. The SWBH campaign offers neighborhood residents whose homes were flooded by Hurricane Katrina awareness of contaminated soil in their neighborhoods. It also offers training for residents to take proactive steps to remove the contaminants from their community.
