A CALL TO ACTION |
|
Please join the African American Forum on Race & Regionalism in a National Day of Prayer and Call to Action in support of efforts to rebuild the Gulf Coast so that everyone in the region—especially low-income communities and communities of color—can participate and prosper from redevelopment and recovery initiatives in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. We urge your participation and solidarity with those whose futures depend on sustainable and equitable economic and social recovery.
Here are the details:
- On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, March 3, 4, and 5, 2006, and continuing for the next six weekends, churches, synagogues, mosques, and other religious and spiritual gatherings are asked to include a time in their programs for prayer and reflection focusing on the needs of people in the Gulf Coast region who have been displaced by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
- The prayers and reflections should be followed by actions in support of people in the state and those who have been displaced. Congregations and groups might choose to donate to organizations helping to clean up or rebuild homes, or organize letter-writing campaigns to urge the allocation of more funding by Congress. Ideas for action can be found at www.linkedfate.org
- Prayers, reflections, and actions taken should focus on holding the federal government accountable to the people in the region and urge the government to provide the resources necessary to
- rebuild the Gulf Coast region;
- improve the lives of and secure a future for Gulf Coast residents;
- provide opportunities and support for displaced residents and the communities that received them; and
- bring federal resources to the region without redirecting funds from programs that already serve people in need.
